Cancer Cases Downwind of Tullamarine Toxic Dump
Tullamarine Hazardous Waste landfill commenced operations in 1972. It received a broad range of hazardous wastes until May 2008. By the mid 1980s it became apparent that dumping liquid and solid wastes of this nature was environmentally dangerous and could have substantial impacts on human health. Dumping of liquid waste at Tullamarine ceased in 1987. However, this simply meant that although the waste became ‘spadeable,’ it still contained hazardous chemicals -heavy metals, PCBs and other toxic sludges, known to be extremely dangerous to human health.
The Tullamarine hazardous waste landfill creates a much higher health risk than other landfills because of this past practice of dumping toxic liquid wastes and sludges.
Residents have also been exposed to dust blowing off site and practices that spread microscopic toxic particles across surrounding homes. A number of fires in the past have also exposed residents to a risk of dioxin and other contamination.
Due to growing community concerns about the frequency of cancer in the local community TTTDAG conducted a study of the incidence of cancer in the community and requested a Preliminary Health Study be undertaken.
The study findings indicate serious grounds for concern about the adverse health impacts of the Tullamarine hazardous waste landfill.
The report from that study will be released at 10 am, Wednesday May 12, at the Green Building 60 Leicester Street Carlton.
